Hey! I’m Riven

Who I Am

I’m Riven Harlow, and I’m a 29-year-old genderfluid cottage witch. I’m a momma, a wife, and a pet parent.
I’m also an artist and aspiring writer. And, obviously, I’m a witch!

You can find my author/art links here.

My Family

I have two kidlets; Scotty, who’s 10, and Willow, who’s 8. I’m married to my high school sweetheart (for lack of better term; we were both homeschooled and met at work when we were teens!), Devon. We’ve been together for 10 years, married for 8. Fun fact: Little miss Willow came two weeks early– on the day I was supposed to get married! And she’s made things all about her ever since. 😂

My pets are numerous. Here’s the list:

  • Mochi – Our oldest pet. He’s a loving but somewhat skittish 7-year-old (as of 2023, when I’m penning this page), short-haired tuxedo cat. He loves cuddling, but gets spooked easily. He was a rescue and had been in and out of 4 homes before we adopted him when he was 4 months old. Yes, that means 4 homes and being returned 4 times in just 2 months!
  • Firefly – This crazy, long-haired tabby girl is also a rescue, and is also 7-years-old. She’s kinda weird; she loooves pets, but she absolutely will not hold still for them. She’ll nip at you and paw at you when you’re petting her, but then she meows for you to continue when you stop. She’s got a HIGH prey drive and is an excellent pest control. She’s just a few months younger than Mochi. She lost her tail as a kitten when she was hit by a car.
  • Zuko – Also from a rescue, but thankfully, this pretty boy doesn’t have a sad story. He’s a 4-year-old flame-point Ragdoll cat. There’s not a single brain cell within him, but he is the sweetest boy who’s great about letting anyone pick him up and love on him. His big, blue eyes make him get away with just about anything. He’s too pretty!
  • Omen and Mystic – The twins, as we call them. They’re both void cats (black cats) and they’re siblings. They came from a rescue, as well, though I have no idea of their history. They’re only a year old, though Mystic is tiny and still looks like a kitten! While her brother is a whopping 13lbs., she’s just barely 7lbs. Omen also has a white tail tip, so telling them apart is pretty easy! Omen is easy-going and active. Mystic is dainty, standoffish but occasionally cuddly, and cautious.
  • Kouga – A 6-year-old, black tri Australian Shepherd with marbled blue/brown eyes. He’s a neurotic little guy. He’s really loving with people, to the point of getting so excited that he piddles. He’s grumpy with other animals most of the time, though, due to already having arthritis. He’s usually up my butt, following me everywhere I go.
  • Cloud – A 4-year-old, blonde Husky/Great Pyrenees mix. She is the sweetest thing! But also has the Husky stubborn streak, and the sass. She’s very playful and high-energy, but she’s a dog anyone could trust with their kids; she just lays there and lets them lay on her, pet her, and doesn’t react, at all, when they have excited outbursts. It’s like she knows when she needs to be gentle, and it’s so cute!
  • Goku – The newest addition! This bearded dragon is about 2 years old, and he’s pretty chill. He generally sits on a log in his tank, soaking up the light, and his favorite things to eat are zucchini and cilantro.

My Paganism

I’m a cottage witch, meaning my primary method of magick is weaved into my life as a homemaker. Cooking, cleaning, and more all take on an element of magick. I’m also an animist, meaning I believe that all things (including objects) have their own spiritual energies; and an omnist, meaning I believe all religions have kernels of truth.

I’m not Wiccan, and I do not follow the three-fold law. I’m also not a “Satan worshipper” for those oh-so-concerned Christian fundamentalist folks out there. 🙄

Why I’m Vegan

Being an animist, I also believe that reducing harm is a strong part of my path. While no one can ever do 100% no harm in this world, I believe that participating in animal agriculture causes direct harm to those animals and therefore goes directly against my principles and morals. Plants have their own spirits, but not sentience or the ability to feel pain, so I choose to eat them instead. To fully understand how EVERY element of animal agriculture– even the egg and dairy industries– is insanely unethical and cruel, I highly recommend watching this free documentary. It’s a hard watch, for sure, but if you can’t even watch what is being done to these animals, then you shouldn’t be supporting it. The least you can do is open your eyes to their suffering for your benefit.

Why I’m Low-waste

I choose to live a low-waste lifestyle because I revere the earth and her spirit. Again, no one can ever do 100% no harm in this world, and it’s impossible to be 100% zero waste (especially in a capitalist environment), but I try my best.

My Politics

They’re part of who I am, and will definitely be part of my posts at times. I’m very much pro-choice, anti-racist, anti-fascism, anti-capitalism. I believe black lives matter and blue lives don’t exist; cops can take their uniforms off at the end of the day. I believe ACAB (“All Cops are Bastards”); in other words, I believe that the system of policing is broken and needs massive overhaul. (No, I don’t hate all individual cops. I hate the ‘justice’ system and how it protects bad cops and actively causes harm to communities!)

As a non-binary/genderfluid person, I’m also very pro-LGBTQIA2S+.

What is Genderfluid?

Essentially, it means that my sense of gender flows from feminine to masculine and everything in between (or outside of!). Some days, I dress in a masculine manner. Other days, I’m wearing flowing skirts and embracing my feminine side. Most days, I’m somewhere in the middle. I use they/them pronouns exclusively, though there are genderfluid people who prefer the pronouns of the gender they’re expressing at that time.
